"Stop stones" ( 止め石 tome-ishi ) or "barrier guarding stones" ( sekimori-ishi 関守石 ) are small stones that are wrapped in rope and placed on a path to indicate that the entry is not permitted or to encourage you to take another path. They are commonly found in temples, tea houses or traditional Japanese gardens.

With a subtle hint, tome-ishi teach you to be fully aware of even the smallest obstacles and to look at them as guidance into the right direction.
